Narcoota rams in demand
Vendors Tim and Lynn Grosser were pleased with the support by regular clients at the family’s 28th Narcoota Ram sale held on Thursday September 8th.
There was a good clearance with 39 of the 44 sale rams finding a home. The average price was $ 832. The top priced ram was sold to Kym and Karen Nietschke of Eudunda. Kym selected a ram that had elite wool on a free growing skin plus he was the heaviest ram in his drop. This ram was sold for $1700. Auctioneer was Elders local stock agent Matt Ward.
Other local buyers included Malcolm Schutz, Grantley Doecke, Brian Zerner and the young at heart Geoff Schutz. Buyers also travelled from the Murraylands, Mallee, Barossa and the Mid North.
Rodney and Tim appreciate the spectators that make the effort to come and check out how the family’s sheep breeding program has been blessed.
Earlier Documents and information for your review
Dear fellow woolgrower,
We are pleased to extend to you an invitation to our 28th Annual Ram Sale.
This will be on Thursday 8th of September 2011 at 1pm with inspection from 11.00am.
Elders, Roseworthy will be hosting the sale with auctioneer, Matt Ward. We intend to offer 36 rams, plus a pen of rams available for private selection following the auction.
Sire Information
All sires are plain bodied with white wool and good staple length.
There will be 13 rams from Narcoota 7647. His progeny have been prominent in the last two sales. The sire’s fleece of stylish, soft wool has been on display at previous sales.
Narcoota 6119 is our largest sire with bare breech traits. There are 2 rams on offer from this sire.
The selection features 18 rams from Mernowie 782, purchased in 2009. He is an early maturing ram with good growth rate and a bare breech. This sire did produce 1 x black lamb out of a drop of 100. There is a low likelihood of black lambs out of these rams. I would be interested in your feedback.
Other information:
The ram details include a code indicating which rams have some bare skin in the breech area. (Approximately half of the sale rams). These rams were not mulesed. Only 10% of our flock are now mulesed; however we continue to practice tail stripping.
Fleece weights of the 14month rams are not as reliable due to the age of the lambs and the shorter period between shearing. However, I consider the figures to be a useful guide.
The average fibre diameter for our mature ewe flock has been 21.5 microns over the last five years.
It is our aim to maintain wool quality; we expect to see an increase in staple length in our next generation of sheep.
We are aiming to increase muscle and weight in our wether lambs,
so that they readily dress out at approximately 24 kg.
When classing client’s ewe hoggets I am finding less that need culling due to neck folds, muffled faces and reduced skin cuts from shearing.
We have enjoyed a successful lambing period and hope that you will benefit from plainer ewes producing lambs with good birth weights and improved survival.
We look forward to seeing you on the day.
